SUPPORT

Finding positive people who can support you, both when you are unwell and as you recover, can make a big difference.

Friends and families – this means you! You can make a big difference by being understanding and supportive and not judging. Don’t lose sight of the fact that someone experiencing psychosis is just the same person as before. They haven’t changed and neither should you. They are simply unwell and so your support is more important than ever. Just being there when times are tough can mean the world, and as they recover your help can make all the difference. Be available, listen, be a positive source of hope and encouragement, and above all be a friend. Ask what you can do, it doesn’t have to be complicated. How about meeting for a coffee, catching up for a walk and a chat, making a regular time to play sport or offering to cook dinner?

Mindnz has two resources available to help support New Zealand residents:

Family Matters is a DVD produced by the Waitemata District Health Board, designed to help you understand psychosis. Hear four stories from families of distress, determination and recovery.

Supporting Families brochure outlines how family and whanau can help in the recovery of people with mental illness.
